Solr and a Vagrant development environment
So I use this puppet manifest to run up my local development environments on various different computers. One of the things it doesn't do at the moment is Solr--Apache foundation's powerful search server.
Instead, as a work around, I tunnel from my local dev to a staging server over SSH, mapping the Solr port to the same port on my local dev. This has the added advantage of not having to change the URL for the Solr server (which is stored in a Feature). The trap is that Solr expects a particular hostname. So I add that to my local hosts file. This needs to be done in the VirtualBox client for PHP to be able to use it. You can do it on the VirtualBox host too if you want to browse Solr directly.
Putting the domain into the client
$ vagrant ssh
$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 10.0.2.3
$ echo "10.0.2.3 solr.in.example.com" >> /etc/hosts
Putting the domain into the host
$ echo "127.0.0.1 solr.in.example.com" >> /etc/hosts
Then you can test by browsing on the host.http://solr.in.example.com:8983/solr/core0/admin/
